Recorded and mixed February through August 2016 in San Francisco and Hoboken. Mark Kozelek with Steve Shelley on drums. From the summer onward, Trump's face was all over newsstands. The buildup to the election and the shootings made their way into my new album, obviously. As Conor Oberst put it so perfectly at our show in Nashville, "you'd have to have no brain and no soul, for these things to not affect you".

Common As Light And Love Are Red Valleys Of Blood, for the most part, captures events from January to August of this year and how I processed it all while traveling.

Another album was in the works at the same time: the follow up to Jesu/Sun Kil Moon's self-titled debut album. Our second album, entitled 30 Seconds To The Decline Of Planet Earth, will be released on May 5. I'm blessed to have met the very talented Justin Broadrick and to have made these beautiful albums with him.

These two new albums capture more than my reactions to mass murders or the passing of beloved heroes like David Bowie or Muhammad Ali. The Sun Kil Moon and Jesu/Sun Kil Moon albums are also full of love, humor, and my gratitude for the gift of life.
